Core Subjects

Literacy

Reading is developed throughout the whole school, leading to an acceptable level of competence. The resources in school range from picture books, reading scheme books, books from a variety of authors, group reading books and a range of non-fiction library books.

We do all that we can to encourage our children’s natural enthusiasm for writing. We provide a variety of resources to support writing in the early stages. As they grow in confidence and competence, our children are encouraged to express themselves in different forms of writing for example, in descriptive work, reporting skills, poetry, letter writing, instructions, reviews and stories. Their writing extends across the curriculum into History, Geography, Science, Mathematics, Religious Education and Technology.

As we encourage our children to become writers, we aim to guide them to improve the quality of their work in terms of spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting. We encourage our children to share their work with others, adults and children, valuing all forms of the written word.

Mathematics

We aim to give our children the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to use Mathematics in everyday life, whether for domestic social or recreational reasons, or as a basis for further study.

Mathematics is much more than ‘doing sums’ and the children are introduced to the subject through a practical approach e.g. using games and apparatus to help them to grasp essential concepts, whilst practising and developing skills which will lead to a sound understanding of mathematical thinking and computation.

Science

Science is concerned with children finding out about the world around them, including finding out about plants and animals, the weather, space, engines, machines, energy and forces, types and uses of materials. They will also learn about the structure and functions of their bodies and senses.

Our Science curriculum provides the necessary experiences to satisfy the requirements of the National Curriculum and ensure that there is progression in the development of skills and knowledge throughout the age range.
